Pat was admitted to the Law Society of Alberta in June of 1974. For the first 15 years of his practice, he advised and represented insurers almost exclusively. In the past 18 years, he has advised and represented plaintiffs and defendants in personal injury and wrongful death claims, plaintiffs in medical malpractice claims, and plaintiffs and defendants in corporate and commercial matters; and has continued to act as counsel for a number of insurers. He is one of the founding partners of Weir Bowen.
Pat has extensive experience as counsel before all courts in Alberta (including the Provincial Court, Youth Court, District and Supreme Court, Court of Queen’s Bench, and the Alberta Court of Appeal). He has also appeared as counsel before the Workers’ Compensation Board, the Criminal Compensation Board, and the Benchers of the Law Society of Alberta (on disciplinary matters). He has extensive experience as counsel in negotiations, mediations and judicial dispute resolution. He has taken the LESA course in mediation, and has acted as a mediator in over 15 mediations and as an arbitrator on an insurance matter on one occasion.
Pat taught the Bar Admission Course in Trial Preparation to articling students for over 10 years. He presented a paper on subrogation rights to the Western Canadian Conference on Insurance Litigation in Calgary in February of 2003.
Pat has been on the Legal and Real Time Reporting and Advisory Committee for over 10 years.
He was a Director and President of the Effort Society, a non-profit organization for 8 years until 2002.
